First wife of Corp. Robert Hallech McVay (1839-1920). They were married on April 25, 1869 in Davis (Geary) County, Kansas. Mary was the mother of five children: Alfred, Edna, John, Hannah and Mary Catherine McVay. She was the daughter of John Thomas Butterfield and Catherine (Briton) Butterfield. Mary died from complications of childbirth with her youngest child, Mary.

Husband of Frances Ellen (Fridley) McVay (1853-1944). Robert's first wife was Mary C. (Butterfield) McVay (1849-1877). They were married on April 25, 1869 in Davis County, Kansas. Robert had five children with Mary: Alfred C. McVay, Edna (McVay) Chestnut, John McVay, Hannah Elmira (McVay) Compton and Mary Catherine McVay. After Mary died, Robert married Frances Fridley on December 12, 1878. He had six children with Frances: Benjamin William "Ben" McVay, Robert Harold McVay, Bertram "Burt" McVay, Martha E. "Mattie" (McVay) Wandler, Frances May "May" (McVay) Kilian and Edmund H. McVay. Robert enlisted as a private in the 40th Ohio Infantry, Co. B on September 17, 1861 at the age of 22. He was promoted to Full Corporal on February 7, 1863 and mustered out in October 7, 1864 in Atlanta. He fought in many major battles of the Civil War including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Kenesaw Mountain.
