Son of John & Martha (Sharp) Patton. Nathaniel was the oldest of 8 siblings. His siblings were: Martha "Patsey", B. 9 Dec 1779, M. James Campbell; Thomas Elder, B. 29 Jan 1783, M. Jane Glasgow; Infant female, B. 1784, D.?; Nathan, B. 22 Feb 1785, M. Jane Campbell, lived Marshall Co., Ill; John, B. 9 Jun 1787, M. Phebe Caroline Taylor; Mary "Polly", B. 30 May 1789, M. Charles Kirpatrick, 2nd, Wm Evans; Nancy, B. 17 Feb 1791, M. Wm Milligan, 2nd, John Glasgow; Jane, B. ?1792, not married. He married 13 Aug 1797 in Rockbridge Co., Va. He moved with his wife to Adams Co., Ohio circa 1805 & settled in Liberty Twp. near the old Gov. Kirker cemetery homestead. They later moved & settled on what afterward was known as the Ramsey Duffey farm, 2 miles north of North Liberty. Nathaniel cleared a considerable amt. of land & planted an orchard. The first schoolhouse in the neighborhood was built on this farm. On 2 Dec 1806, the Co. Commissioners, proceeded to divide Adams Co., into townships. The next day, they appointed places to hold the first electons. Nathaniel's home was chosen as the place of elections for Wayne Twp. Nathaniel had bought his land in Wayne Twp. from Beasley & Ellison. He found his title defective & lost most of his labor. On 1 Apr 1823, he deposited a certificate of registry of land, paid in full from the General Land Office of the U.S. to the Land Office at Brookville, Ind. He bought 160 acres in section 27 & 80 acres in section 28 of Richland Twp, Rush Co., Ind. In 1824, at age 48, Nathaniel & his family with the exception of their eldest son, John S. Patton, left Adams Co, Ohio & moved to Rush Co., Ind. Nathaniel lived in Richland Twp., Rush Co., Ind until his death in 1844.
