August and Charlotte were married in Cook County Chicago at the home of her sister Minnie Hoff on May 5, 1860. They lived in the area of Palatine, Barrington and Long Grove, Illinois until 1878 when they moved to Wells Creek, Wabaunsee County, Kansas. They bought a farm of 160 acres for $640 at $4 an acre from the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. August and Charlotte built a home and lived at Wells Creek until his death in 1910. After August’s death Charlotte moved to the home of her eldest son, August F. and lived with them until her death in 1930.

August and Charlotte had nine childen. Seven of them, August F., Louis, William, Caroline, Henry, Edward and Emilie were born in Illinois and two, Ida and Amanda were born in Kansas. When they first arrived they attended St. John Lutheran Church. The church and parsonage were located nearly across the road from their farm. Edward and Emilie are buried in the St. John cemetery. At some point the congregation split and another church was formed, the Evangelical and Reform Lutheran Church. This church is now the United Church of Christ. August was one of the charter members of the Evangelical church. August and Charlotte are buried in it’s cemetery.
