Full Name at Death:
Elizabeth Snapp CRAWFORD HAND

----------

Elizabeth Snapp Crawford Hand was born in Nicholas Co, Kentucky, to George Snapp and Sarah "Sally" McIntire. On September 28, 1826, Elizabeth married Thornton "John" Crawford, and together they had two children (John Jr. and Sarah Ann). The family moved to Quincy, Adams Co, Illinois, around 1832. John Sr. entered service for the Black Hawk War soon thereafter. He is found serving as a Sergeant in the Company of Philip W. Martin (later David Crow's Company) on several muster rolls, with his brother James Crawford serving in the same company.

Biographical sketches place Thornton John Crawford's death on August 17, 1833. No other details are known regarding his death or burial. After his death, Elizabeth and her children moved to Greenbush, Warren Co, Illinois, joining her mother and other members of the Snapp family.

On December 23, 1835, Elizabeth married widower Moses Hand, who had one son (Henry) by his first wife. Together, Moses and Elizabeth had seven more children: Mary, Anna Eliza, Giles, Caroline, Jennie, Oscar, and Lizzie.

In the fall of 1856, the family removed to McDonough Co, Illinois, and located in Prairie City, where they were counted among the early settlers. Moses opened a general store, which he ran for many years before he eventually sold out his stock and closed for retirement. Both Moses and Elizabeth were leading members of the Methodist Episcopal church in their community, which was organized in the year of their arrival, 1856. Moses died in 1888, and Elizabeth followed ten years later. They are buried together in Prairie City Cemetery.
