----------
Moses T. Hand was born to Henry Hand and Sarah Davis in Essex Co, New Jersey, on November 4, 1807. His parents, also natives of New Jersey, were of Dutch and English descent. When Moses was a child, his parents removed to New York City and later to Genesee Co, New York. They are found on the 1820 U.S. Census residing near Mount Morris in Genesee Co. The family moved once more, to Ridgefield, Huron Co, Ohio, where Moses' father died in 1831.
Moses was married on May 4, 1831, to Sarah Ann Squire, and they settled in Norwalk, Huron Co, Ohio. They had one child, Henry, born in July 1834. Sarah Ann died on February 10, 1835.
After Sarah Ann's death, Moses moved to Greenbush, Warren Co, Illinois. As his second wife, Moses chose Mrs. Elizabeth Crawford, widow of Thornton "John" Crawford, and daughter of George Snapp. They were wed on December 23, 1835. Mrs. Hand had two children by her first marriage, John and Sarah. Together, Moses and Elizabeth had seven more children: Mary, Anna Eliza, Giles, Caroline, Jennie, Oscar, and Lizzie.
In the fall of 1856, the family removed to McDonough Co, Illinois, and located in Prairie City, where they were counted among the early settlers. Moses opened a general store, which he ran for many years before he eventually sold out his stock and closed for retirement. Both Moses and Elizabeth were leading members of the Methodist Episcopal church in their community, which was organized in the year of their arrival, 1856. Moses died in 1888, and Elizabeth followed ten years later. They are buried together in Prairie City Cemetery.
