Notes for Helen Mae Norman
She was born in a stone house at the southern end of the farm where her family lived. She attended Wesley School for grades 1-8. She graduated for Dickinson County High School in 1931.

She was married on December 28, 1933 in the living room of her parent’s house. She and Karl moved a lot in the early years when he taught school and was a principal. The lived at Enterprise and Chapman along with several other small towns in Dickinson and Gerry County, Kansas.

They moved to Lawrence in 1946 when Karl got a job as a professor at the University of Kansas.

She joined Chapter CW of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1957. She was a member of P.E.O. for over 50 years, serving as President twice. She also made the chapters initiation gowns.

She moved to Osage City living in a small house and eventually to an assisted living and later a nursing home.

Played the violin and the piano. She loved to sew; had a “green thumb”; she made several quilts and quilted wall hangings. She also painted. She was creative and kind and always dressed beautifully. She was greatly loved by her family and her many friends.

50th Anniversary article: 12-28-1983

Mr. and Mrs. Karl D. Edwards

Mr. and Mrs. Karl D. Edwards will be honored with a 50th wedding anniversary celebration from 2 to 4:30 p.m. next Saturday at their home, 2502 Jasu Dr. Hosts will be their children, Mr. and Mrs. Al Park, Osage City and Nancy Howard, Bountiful, Utah and their grandchildren Susan Earhart and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Granger, all of Lawrence and Barbara and Brandon Howard, Bountiful. Friends and relatives are invited. The couple requests no gifts.

The Edwards will also be honored with a square dance at 8 p.m. Friday at Deerfield School. Square dance friends and guests are invited.

The couple was married Dec. 28, 1933, at the home of her parents, near Chapman. From 1931 to 1942, Edwards taught in rural schools in Geary County and at the Chapman high school. He was superintendent of schools in Enterprise from 1943 to 1946, when the couple moved to Lawrence, where he served in various teaching and administrative posts with the Kansas University School of Education until his retirement in the spring of 1978.
